When you are wanting to buy pond pumps for your garden pond or pool you will have no difficulty whatsoever because there are so many suppliers of this commodity you are bound to find the exact one that you need.

Always have your requirements worked out before you even start to look. It can be a costly mistake if you buy something that turns out not to be correct for your needs.

You couldn’t put the same size pond pumps into a tiny little water feature as you would need for a serious garden pond with plants and fish. Everything hinges on how much water your pond/pool contains and how much needs circulating every hour.

This circulation is absolutely crucial to the wellbeing of your pond. Nobody enjoys a scummy smelly pond, you want to be able to enjoy your pool, perhaps set your garden table and chairs by the side of it to have a beautifully restful area in your garden to enjoy a little peace and quiet from the usual hustle and bustle of daily life.

The need for clean water is especially critical if you are going to have fish. How are you to see and enjoy them if the water is cloudy and murky? You are more likely to see them floating on the top if you don’t take care of the cleanliness and hygiene of the water.

This is what your pond pumps are for, they move the water around every hour and re-oxygenate it.

This is what will keep it clear and wholesome, a good place for your plants to flourish and your fish to be happy.

If you use the internet rather than visiting an actual store, you are going to have the benefit of seeing everything that is available without actually leaving your easy chair. You can check out all the specifications, prices, availability, etc. and even if you then visit your local supplier as least you are going to be armed with a lot more information.

Pond pumps come in various sizes, unbelievably from those able to pump 40 gallons per hour right up to those which will move around 6,000 gallons per hour, and everything inbetween.

If your need is for a larger pump you may find that you will have a choice of cable lengths.

Fountain pumps which will let you adjust the flow to suit your taste.

Your pump could either be external or submersible. The submersible type are usually used for the small and simple little ponds which hold less than 4000 gallons. They are extremely simple to install.

If your pond or pool is larger and you need an external pump you may need to give this more thought as to its locality. Naturally you are going to need an outdoor power point and it is best if this is not too close to the actual pond water.

If at any time you are not sure exactly what you want then your supplier, either offline or even online, will be more than pleased to give you the advice you need. Remember, don’t rush in and buy the wrong thing, this can result in a total waste of money and nobody wants to do this nowadays.

When you start to look for a pump for your pond you will find there are pumps, pumps and more pumps, you will definitely be spoilt for choice.

Pond pumps are used for re-circulating the water and as they are the means of keeping your pond healthy you should take great care in the choosing.

Consider the type of pump first – you may think you are doing yourself a favor in the money department by buying a cheap water pump but this may not work out that way. It may use more energy than you expect. Magnetic drive water pumps for ponds can be a much better choice because they are use energy efficiently, they are compact and they are also very durable.

Durability is important because your pump may be running continuously for many months at a time.

There are submersible pumps, external pumps and pumps which can be used either in or out of the pond.

You also need to consider how much water you are wanting to re-circulate, how many gallons are in your pond? Ratings on water pumps for ponds goes in gallons per hour [gph] or per minute [gpm] from various heights.

The criteria for your pond pump is that it should be strong enough to circulate at the very least 50% of the volume of the pond water every hour. If your pond held 500 gallons for arguments sake, this indicates that your pond pump should be able to circulate 250-gph.

Pumps come in a large range capable of pumping from just 40 to as much as 6000 gallons per hour.

You need to factor in also whether you are going to have a waterfall or a filter. This will affect the type of pump you choose.

You also need to consider whether your pond is purely decorative or whether you intend keeping fish. If you want fish then you certainly have to know what they need. They definitely need a good supply of oxygen and pond filter bacteria to thrive and stay healthy.

You may think that bacteria wouldn’t be good for the fish, but they are actually necessary to keep them in good health.

A water feature in your garden is always lovely to look at and the best way you can keep it in good order is to make sure you pick the correct pump to do the job.

If your pond is well looked after and kept clean and healthy it will always be lovely to look at, but if you do not maintain it properly you will find that you are just providing a breeding ground for bacteria and algae. Always do your homework when you choose to have a pond in your garden you must know how to maintain it to get the most enjoyment from it.

Water pumps for ponds are literally the heart of any pond whatever the size and need to be suitable in every way to do the job required of them.

You can actually keep algae in check just by having aquatic plants in your pond. When the bacteria in pond filters break the harmful pollutants down into nitrates the plants absorb these nitrites.

If you have fish in your pond it is essential that they have open spaces of water where they can surface, this is their primary source of oxygen.

You really do need pond filters, they are a fundamentally essential piece of equipment so that your pond always has clean, clear and healthy pond water.

You could use a UV pond filter, this is extra to the normal filter you will have in your pond. This one is called a ‘clarifier’ because it doesn’t actually physically remove any algae from the pond.

This sort of system can be used to stop all that algae that causes green water.

The UV filter is not cheap, but if you are serious about your pond maintenance then you will I am sure, feel it is worth the cost to have a beautifully clear pond, which if you have fish is essential. One of the benefits of clear water is that you can actually see your fish.

There is a sort of filter which is called a ‘skimmer’. What this means is that it actually sort of vacuums off the top all the floating debris that accumulates if left and ends up making the pond water very cloudy. This can be attached to a pump which can be static or floating.

Biofilters can make a huge difference to your pond water, even a life/death difference!
Too many fish in a small pond make conditions in that pond quite poisonous. The waste products from the fish are mainly expressed as ammonia which is poisonous even in small quantities.

The biofilter contains a type of bacteria which converts the ammonia into nitrite chemicals which are less poisonous than ammonia or nitrites.

This conversion of ammonia into nitrites is an ongoing process in any pond that contains fish.
The biofilter first and foremost purifies the water then it removes particles which make the water appear cloudy.

Unless your pond is connected to a moving fresh water supply you are going to need pond filters.
When a pond is joined with other moving water, say a stream the water is being constantly refreshed but if it is isolated then you cannot keep it clean and healthy without a filter.

Even if you have plants which are very helpful they cannot do the whole job. Rather strangely it is called a ‘vegetable filter’ when you plants to do some of the work.

When you set out to buy a pump for your garden pond you need to know certain things to help you choose the correct one.

Firstly, how many gallons does your pond contain? It is essential that you don’t just guess at this figure because the strength of the pump is based upon how many gallons it can turn in an hour [GPH].

If your pond is rectangular in shape then you simply multiply the length in feet x width in feet x depth in feet and the answer is your cubic feet calculation.

For a circular pond you would multiply half the diameter in feet x half the diameter in feet x the depth in feet and again the answer is cubic feet.

Freeform pre-shaped ponds are bit more tricky. You need to breakdown each portion into a series of rectangles and circles and calculate as explained above. Then add all the cubic feet together to give you an estimation of the cubic feet.

Each cubic foot will contain 7 1/2 gallons of water so to calculate the total you multiply the total cubic feet x 7 1/2 and the answer will be gallons.

For instance if your pond pump was required to turn at least 250 gallons per hour, i.e. half of the pond capacity [500 gallons] although 500 gallons per hour is preferable.
You would need a pump that is designated at at least 500GPH. It is better to have a pump that can handle more GPH rather than spot on the amount you have in your pond. A bit of power in reserve is more desirable.

Then you need to know whether you just want a pump to lie in the pond and turn the water or you want it to run a fountain.

A submersible pump is the most economical type of pond pump for a small pond although this type of pump can sometimes suffer a seal rupture and this unfortunately allows coolant to get into the water and this can be dangerous for your fish.

The best kind of pump is a magnetically operated one. It may be more expensive to buy but you will find that it is less expensive to run and less prone to problems.

You need an outdoor outlet for your garden pond pump and this needs to be placed at about 6 feet from the water. This should be equipped with a ground fault interrupter which will detect if any water gets near the wiring and it will cut the power to your pond pump.

A garden pond is a lovely sight and you need to keep it healthy, therefore, be careful to choose the correct type pump for your pond.
