![]() Pond FiltersYou can actually keep algae in check just by having aquatic plants in your pond. When the bacteria in pond filters break the harmful pollutants down into nitrates the plants absorb these nitrites. If you have fish in your pond it is essential that they have open spaces of water where they can surface, this is their primary source of oxygen. You really do need pond filters, they are a fundamentally essential piece of equipment so that your pond always has clean, clear and healthy pond water. You could use a UV pond filter, this is extra to the normal filter you will have in your pond. This one is called a ‘clarifier’ because it doesn’t actually physically remove any algae from the pond. This sort of system can be used to stop all that algae that causes green water. The UV filter is not cheap, but if you are serious about your pond maintenance then you will I am sure, feel it is worth the cost to have a beautifully clear pond, which if you have fish is essential. One of the benefits of clear water is that you can actually see your fish. There is a sort of filter which is called a ‘skimmer’. What this means is that it actually sort of vacuums off the top all the floating debris that accumulates if left and ends up making the pond water very cloudy. This can be attached to a pump which can be static or floating. Biofilters can make a huge difference to your pond water, even a life/death difference! The biofilter contains a type of bacteria which converts the ammonia into nitrite chemicals which are less poisonous than ammonia or nitrites. This conversion of ammonia into nitrites is an ongoing process in any pond that contains fish. Unless your pond is connected to a moving fresh water supply you are going to need pond filters. Even if you have plants which are very helpful they cannot do the whole job. Rather strangely it is called a ‘vegetable filter’ when you plants to do some of the work. |
